IN 1455 THE DWELLERS ON THE BORDER OF YORKSHIRE & LANCASHIRE FACED THE OUTBREAK OF THE WAR OF THE ROSES. THEY CHOSE FRIENDSHIP OVER CONFLICT AND EMBARKED ON A THIRTY YEAR ADVENTURE ACROSS THE WORLD JOURNEYING HOME ONLY WHEN PEACE RETURNED. 

Along the way they experienced new cultures, made new friends and tasted new foods. Whilst there is much to separate the people of Yorkshire and Lancashire one thing they agree on is their love of a proper roast dinner and the Yorkshire Pudding. No matter where they journeyed, each week The Fellowship would gather round their camp fire and enjoy their Yorkshire Puddings and reminisce of the lives and people they left behind, as well as welcome new friends into their mix. As they travelled they noticed the flavour of the Yorkshire Pudding would vary, and the keen eyed amongst them took heed of how the locals cows would graze on the native herbs and spices and how it was that which then infused flavours into their milk and thus into the Puddings. Inspired, the Fellowship cooks began creating fillings that also incorporated these local flavours and the Daft Puddin’s were born.

RECENTLY REDISCOVERED THE DAFT PUDDIN’S ARE ONCE AGAIN SHARED, USING THE VERY BEST PRODUCE FROM FARMERS AND ARTISANS IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND AND THE FLAVOURS OF THE WORLD.

A mudbloods TALE

Daft Puddin' is the brain child of Jason Hartley. Reformed brand and advertising strategist, award winning chef & restauranteur, food campaigner and now Chief Puddin' at The Daft Puddin'.

Jason was first inspired to cook by occasional forays into the kitchen of the cafe his mother ran in Blackpool in the 1980’s as a nine year old to make scrambled eggs. 

It only took 25 years, whilst living and working in Amsterdam, in 2009 for him to walk into a kitchen again and in doing so creating Amsterdam’s first ever pop up restaurant. His gourmet brunch events quickly grew to weekly 150 person sell outs and led to him opening his first restaurant and cocktail bar, HQ which after only six months won a TimeOut Best of Amsterdam award amongst others.

After 14 years in Amsterdam he returned to the UK. Daft Puddin’ came to mind in 2014 as he saw very little food concepts in the burgeoning street food scene in London that felt 'British', in a modern multicultural way not a nasty ancient Farage kind of way.

As a Northerner (a mudbood to an Oldham mother and Rotherham father) Sunday dinners were all about the Yorkshire puddings. It struck Jason this symbol of family and heritage in British food had been overlooked.

He did an occasional series of pop ups in London with Daft Puddin' before finally taking the plunge, giving up the advertising and branding career again and moving back north in 2017. He launched Daft Puddin's first permanent spot, a 7 day a week food truck in York's iconic Shambles Market in early 2018. A second is to follow that will travel around the country to festivals and for private events.

A passionate advocate for working with local producers and supporting traditional farming methods and high animal welfare he has spent the last year identifying the very best produce the North of England has to offer and uses Daft Puddin' to showcase this to try and inspire more Northerners to eat the food on their doorstep.

In late 2017 I also become Head of the Chef Alliance for Slow Food in England, the world's largest global movement for good, clean, fair food. The focus of the chef alliance is to encourage Britains leading chefs to champion the rarest and best food produce and producers across the nation. You can find out more about Slow Food here.
